Creative Non-Sparkler Wedding Send-Off Ideas

Traditionally rice was tossed when the newlyweds leave their ceremony or reception, but as weddings get more personalized and eco-friendly, couples are opting for some more creative ideas for their big send off. It’s now common to see a tossing of confetti, rose petals or dried lavender a moment after the couple says, “I do” as they walk up the aisle, as well as when they leave the their reception at the end of the night.

Sparklers have become the go-to wedding send-off of choice for nighttime affairs because of their celebratory vibe, but here are 10 other creative wedding send-off ideas you may want to consider for your wedding.

Wish Lanterns

In lieu of a traditional going-away toss, ask your guests to all light and release a wish lantern. Having guests write a wish for the newlyweds on them adds a lovely personal touch. Once the sun has set have everyone light their lantern and release it as a group. Your photographer will love this send off as it makes for truly beautiful photos!

You can never go wrong with this popular wedding send-off idea. Whether they are small or over-sized, children of all ages love blowing bubbles. For your wedding exit, give each guest a small container with a bubble wand and have them blow bubble kisses at you as you leave your ceremony or reception. To increase the quantity blowing your way, have your wedding planner set up an automatic bubble machine near your exit path for even more whimsical photos!

Fall Leaves

If you chose to wed in the fall because you love the season, or the colors of it, why not have guests toss leaves in the colors of the seasons – reds, oranges, golds and browns – as you make your exit. Collect your leaves then using a cool iron seal them between two pieces of waxed paper to help them retain their color until the big day.

Sprinkles or Nonpareils

Whether you want something colorful or a nod to your love of ice cream and treats, sprinkles or nonpareils are a super-sweet toss idea. They’re both available in solid colors to match your selected wedding palette or rainbow varieties.

Confetti can be found in so many different styles. There are tiny circles or oversized ones, photofetti with pictures of the happy couple printed on them, biodegradable options, different shapes they can be cut into and even confetti push pops! When deciding on what type of confetti to use, pick a type that complements your wedding style and palette, but also be sure to have your planner check if the venue permits it. If they only allow for biogegradeable, test it out at home first. Just because it's made of paper doesn't mean it will instantly dissolve leaving quite a cleanup for later on.

Mini Beach Balls

Getting married on or near the beach or lake? Mini inflatable beach balls can be a fun themed wedding exit. Have guests toss them as you make your way up the aisle, and let the kids play with them during the reception.

Ribbon Wands

Since some venues won’t allow guests to toss confetti (it does make a mess!) ribbon wands are a great alternative wedding send-off idea that can be easily homemade to match your wedding color scheme. Add tiny bells to the top for a delightful audio visual experience.

When newlyweds hear the sound of bells ringing, or a spoon clinking a glass, the tradition dictated that they should kiss, so why not have family and friends ring large jingle bells during your the getaway moment. You can share a kiss or two on the way out and get some really fabulous photos! There are a number of different bells you can choose from: tiny “kissing” bells, large jingle bells, bells attached to a short dowel or even bicycle bells, followed by a tandem bike ride getaway.

Have friends and family cheer you on as you leave the ceremony or reception site by waving small pom-poms in your favorite team's colors or the color of your wedding. Pom-Poms can be found in nearly any color of the rainbow in solids, metallics, or a mix of white and another color. This way you are sure to find one that’s perfect for your send off.

Glow Sticks

Light up the night with bright glow sticks! Have your DJ pass them out during the reception for fabulous photos out on the dance floor. Then when your guests are done parting with them have them make their way to the exit and wave them in the air like they just don’t care! As you make your way to your getaway car this will be on photo you won't want to miss.
