The Best Sunscreen For Your Wedding Day
Your mom always told you to wear SPF, and every single skincare expert would agree. If you are the bride to be this season, then our sympathies are with you. The temperature has been soaring to the upper 90s and will likely be hitting triple digits. The sun doesn't only bring scorching heat but it does irreparable damage to your skin too, which you really cannot afford on your wedding day. And trust us, we hate wearing sunscreen since it feels goopy, thick, leaves a white cast, makes your makeup cake and your skin shiny, not to mention, it gets all over everything. But, sunscreen, an important part of your skin care regimen, has come a long way. Now it is virtually undetectable under makeup. No longer are you left with that tacky feeling on your face and you don't have to worry about your makeup sliding off. You can even say goodbye to that unappealing chemical smell, too. Many of our favorite clear sunscreens are even loaded with beauty-boosting benefits that in some cases even act as a primer for your skin, evening our redness and decreasing the appearance of pores while adding much-needed hydration for smooth makeup application. There are several different textures and thicknesses of sunscreens, so be sure to choose one that suits your preferences that would be best under your bridal makeup especially if you're planning a wedding full of activities outside in the sunshine.
Neutrogena - UltraSheer Dry Touch Sunblock SPF 50+
This sunscreen does not feel oily on your face and also saves you from darkening, sunburns and age spots. It is amongst the best sunscreens available, at an affordable price, on the market today.
SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50
When choosing a facial sunscreen, look for products that contain at least nine percent zinc oxide. This is one of our favorites. It provides broad-spectrum protection and has a subtle, flattering tint as well as a lovely silky texture that glides on nicely.
EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46
This is ideal for skin prone to acne, rosacea and hyperpigmentation. This oil-free blend is powered by micronized zinc oxide, hydrating hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and niacinamide to combat redness. It’s super lightweight, non-greasy, and doesn’t leave a ghostly white cast.
Kiehl's - Ultra Light Daily UV Defense Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 PA+++
We love this 100% mineral-based anti-wrinkle sunscreen with SPF 50. It is perfect for sensitive and acne-prone skin. It's infused with antioxidant-powered Vitamin E which fights the effects of damaging free radicals. It is chemical, fragrance, and paraben free. There is an exclusive range for grooms too!!
Supergoop! Smooth & Poreless 100% Mineral Matte Screen SPF 40
This is proof that perfection does exist! We love this tinted formula especially since it is available in one universal hue that’s incredibly blendable and literally works on every skin tone!! Seriously! It blurs imperfections for a flawless, matte finish and if that’s all it did, it would be enough. But Supergoop! also makes it SPF 40 which makes this option even better!
Coola Full Spectrum 360° Sun Silk Drops Organic Sunscreen SPF 30
There's so much more to this option than just the pretty pink packaging. Inside this bottle is a silky, smooth elixir that’s made to combat the perils of modern life. Yep! You guessed it, UVA/UVB rays as well as IR and HEV from exposure to our screens. Safe to say, this full-spectrum SPF definitely earns top billing in our book!
Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush-On Shield SPF 50
Many brides have told me that their makeup artist urged them to forgo sunscreen on the big day because it doesn’t sit well under foundation, however, there IS an option to avoid that. Colorscience mineral powder has 22.5 percent zinc oxide and light-reflective mica. And the self-dispensing brush is absolutely perfect for touch-ups throughout the day.
Now, I am sure you're thinking, this has all been great info, but I have heard that sunscreen will ruin my wedding photos? I've heard that this can be an issue and the reason why is actually quite simple. All the technology that protects your skin from the harmful sun's rays is built to specifically reflect the light, so we suggest you select a clear sunscreen or one like the Colorscience option above to be sure this is avoided. You should also, keep in mind that the only time SPF is truly a problem is when the photographer uses a direct flash, so be sure to book a professional wedding photographer that uses off camera flash. You see, if you are wearing sunscreen and you are hit directly with a flash there is a good chance that you will appear ghostly looking or as if you are wearing a lot of baby powder on your face. This effect is known as ‘Flash Back.’
Another thing to remember is that if you are having your wedding two hours before sunset, unless you are really sensitive to the sun, you can get away without wearing sunscreen, however, if your wedding happens to be in the middle of the day then please wear sunscreen as the sun is very powerful here in the south. Either way, in the end, we would definitely recommend speaking with your makeup artist and your photographer about doing a trial run.
