Serendipity Massage & Wellness

Sure, massage can help you relax, however, massage therapy can do much more than that especially if you visit Serendipity Massage and Wellness

Offering many different types of massage from the most common Swedish massage which consists of a more gentle form of massage using long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration and tapping to help relax and energize you; to Deep Tissue massage where they use slower, more-forceful strokes to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, commonly to help with muscle damage from injuries; to Thai massage which incorporates a traditional combination of point pressure, energy meridian work, and yoga-like stretching for an invigorating and balancing experience.

There are so many benefits of massage especially if you are taking on more stress than usual as when you sell a house, begin a new job, start a family or plan a wedding.

Massage is often considered part of complementary and alternative medicine, however, according to Annelise Werme, owner of Serendipity Massage & Wellness, it is increasingly being offered along with standard treatments for a wide range of medical conditions and situations.

Studies of the benefits of massage demonstrate that it is an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain and muscle tension but also it can be quite helpful if you suffer from anxiety, digestive disorders, fibromyalgia, headaches, insomnia related to wedding stress (or really any kind of stress), myofascial pain syndrome, soft tissue strains or injuries, sports injuries or temporomandibular joint pain.

Beyond the benefits for specific conditions or diseases, some people enjoy massage because it often produces feelings of caring, comfort and connection. In addition, we have six reasons why you should either book an appointment for a massage at Serendipity Massage & Wellness or try out Annelise’s services at Cultivate CoWorking on the first Wednesday of each month where she offers chair massages for $1 per minute.

1. It counteracts all that sitting you do.

“Most individuals are dealing with some kind of postural stress,” says Annelise Werme, licensed massage therapist, and owner of Serendipity Massage & Wellness. “More often than not stress tends to manifest in the shoulders and neck.” Desk workers, beware!! More advanced forms of postural stress “show up as pain or weakness in the low back and gluteals caused by prolonged periods of sitting.” Luckily, massage from a licensed massage therapist such as Annelise Werme can counteract the imbalance caused from sitting, which means you can keep your desk job, just as long as you schedule a regular massage with her skilled hands to eleviate any potential issues.

2. It eases muscle pain & strain.

Stress causes your muscles to knot up, so if you’ve got sore muscles, and who doesn’t, massage therapy can help. “Massage increases and improves circulation, in much the same way rubbing your elbow when you knock it on a table helps to relieve the pain,” says Annelise Werme, licensed massage therapist and owner of Serendipity Massage & Wellness, “massage therapy is even as effective as other methods of treatment for chronic back pain.”

3. It soothes anxiety, stress and depression.

Let’s face it. Weddings are incredibly stressful. Less so if you hire a planner to handle all the details, but if you only have someone to take care of the month-of or day-of duties consider budgeting for massage as part of your wedding expenses. “Human touch, in a context that is safe, friendly and professional, can be incredibly therapeutic and relaxing,” says Annelise Werme, licensed massage therapist and owner of Serendipity Massage & Wellness. Women diagnosed with breast cancer who received massage therapy three times a week reported being less depressed and less angry, according to a study published in the International Journal of Neuroscience. In addition, a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, found that patients who were depressed and anxious were much more relaxed and happy, and had reduced stress levels after massage.

 4. It improves sleep.

Brides need sleep. This is one of the best ways to avoid going all Bridezilla on your loved ones. Not only can massage encourage a restful sleep-it also helps those who can’t otherwise comfortably rest or relax. Shut your mind off and forget any wedding woes for an hour and just let the professionals from Serendipity Massage & Wellness work their magic.

5. It boosts immunity.

You’re getting married!! You simply cannot afford to take time off to be sick. A study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that massage boosts patients’ white blood cell count (which plays a large role in defending the body from illness and disease). Need we say more?

6. It relieves headaches.

Next time a headache hits, try booking a last-minute massage with Serendipity Massage & Wellness. “Massage decreases frequency and severity of tension headaches,” says Annelise Werme, licensed massage therapist. Granada University in Spain found that a single session of massage therapy has an immediate effect on perceived pain in patients with chronic tension headaches.

Now that you know why you should get a massage, I am sure you are thinking but, what about __________???

Well, here are a few things that the amazing and talented licensed professionals from Serendipity Massage & Wellness want you to know.

1.  Every BODY is beautiful.

Once you are relaxed and happy you get a wonderful glow about you. This is what your licensed massage therapist sees. They see that you are cared for and treasured…you are radiant, you are beautiful.

2. It really doesn’t matter if you haven’t shaved.

They don’t even notice unless you bring it up. And even then it really doesn’t matter. That is what all the essential oils and lotions are for.

 3. Women have cellulite. ALL of them.

This is not a defect or even something to be ashamed of. It is natural and simply a consequence of not being photoshopped. It truly breaks your LMT’s heart if you feel insecure about your body because of media pressure. They don’t ever show the reality…everyone, and we do mean everyone, has stretch marks, scars, deformities, moles, muscles, cellulite, and dry skin. It’s ok. It’s normal.

 4. Yes, that is probably normal.

Is this normal? My _____ does this. My ____ has that. Feel free to ask any questions you might have. As a regulated health care professional, outside of orthopaedic concerns, they will do their very best to answer your questions. If it is outside their scope of expertise they will refer you to your physician, however, more often than not, it’s normal.

 5. Don’t be shy about your butt.

Men have silly buttocks. They are kind of scrawny and the tissue is jumpy because it is unpadded so you have to be careful of the levels of pressure applied, but just like women, it is simply a collection of three muscles to your LMT. They don’t see fat, jiggle or boney behinds. To your licensed massage therapist they are simply gluteals or glutes. If you have lower back pain associated with these areas please be sure to let them know.

 6. Bodily functions are normal.

You are entering into a fully relaxed state. Your parasympathetic nervous system will begin to shine. This means that rest and digest will begin to occur, so if you start to grumble, growl, snore or even pass gas, this is completely normal. It won’t phase your LMT. It’s a good sign that you are relaxed. They won’t judge…we promise.

 7. Please don’t undrape.

LMT’s are legally required to follow specific draping protocols to protect you and themselves. They will only undrape the area being treated at that time and then fully redrape before working on the next area. Please allow them to keep you covered for everyone’s comfort.

 8. At Serendipity Massage & Wellness your level of comfort is of the utmost importance. You only need to undress to your level of ease. If touching is something you are still hesitant about, we suggest starting off with a chair massage. These can be scheduled in office or they can even come to you where you can remain comfortable and fully clothed as they ease you out of pain.

 9. Stretching is important.

Exercise, physical therapy and stretching is very important to health and healing. While it would be wonderful to have an LMT with you at all times, sadly they are unable because they are caring for so many others as well, so please help them help you by doing your “homework.”

 10. The staff of Serendipity Massage & Wellness TRULY cares.

It really matters to them that you tell them how you are feeling so that they can best help you to feel well. They worry when you are struggling and want to celebrate your successes along side of you. It is their goal to make you better. This is why they do it. They truly care…you and your health are a priority.
